Fun Friday Food Facts: summer foods edition
Abstract
To celebrate the warm weather this week, we have found a few food facts about the types of food people typically enjoy during the summer months of the year.
  • Watermelon: Is about 92% water, making it one of the most hydrating fruits you can eat. It’s a good source of vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and antioxidants like lycopene, which supports heart health and may reduce inflammation.
  • Ice Cream: While vanilla is the most popular flavour globally, there are interesting varieties like garlic, squid ink, wasabi and blue cheese in different parts of the world.
  • Strawberries & cream: Wimbledon serves around two million strawberries during the tournament. They’re picked fresh each morning from farms in Kent and served within 24 hours.
  • Lemonade: It dates back to 16th century France. The earliest versions were sweetened with honey and were a popular beverage among royalty.
  • Caprese salad: The colours of the ingredients—red (tomato), white (mozzarella), and green (basil)—are meant to represent the colours of the Italian flag.
  • BBQ: 52% of people in the UK own a barbecue grill and 47% of households host at least one BBQ party during the summer.
