Abstract
The Newcastle University Students’ Union has passed a motion by 88% to source food from local farmers and suppliers in an attempt to reduce food miles.

The motion read: "It is the moral duty of Newcastle University Students Union to support local businesses as this will help boost the economy of Newcastle and improve the livelihoods of residents of Newcastle.

"It is in the Student Unions best interests to support local businesses for the benefit of the local area and the students of Newcastle University who may have used these businesses before."

Commenting on the news about Newcastle University’s sustainable sourcing Alexia Robinson, founder of love British Food, said: “Excellent news and a tremendous boost for @LoveBritishFood’s work promoting British food in the public sector.”

In December Love British Food called on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to encourage the public sector to buy British food. Love British Food wants the Government to spend 85% of the current public sector budget for procuring food and catering services with local producers and British businesses.

On 11 February Public Sector Catering are hosting a webinar on British food and using local suppliers. Robinson from Love British Food will discuss their work promoting and supporting UK local producers with PSC editor David Foad.
