A recent YouGov survey revealed that 37% of parents felt that school food would be healthier if more plant-based food was on the menu.
Oli Sampson, managing director of frozen food distributor Central Foods which distributes a range of vegan ingredients and products suitable for the school catering sector, said: “Plant-based dietary is very much here to stay now. Although an increasing number of people identify as vegans or vegetarians, it’s the rise in flexitarianism that is really fuelling the boom in demand for meat-free or dairy-free products.
“School caterers need to offer appealing meat and dairy-free dishes. It’s crucial to opt for good quality, tasty plant-based products and ingredients. This will ensure that the plant-based range goes down well with everyone, not just those with dietary requirements.”
Central Foods says products like the vegan-friendly and gluten-free KaterVeg! vegan mince are proving popular with the foodservice sector because they are so versatile.
The vegan mince can be used as a meat substitute in traditional menu items like spaghetti bolognese, shepherd’s pie, lasagne and chili. It’s more cost-effective and provides a greater yield than beef mince – up to 20% more - making it an attractive alternative.
Sampson added: “Using vegan mince is an easy way to encourage take up of plant-based options. Simply swap out meat mince for vegan mince. With the right blend of herbs, spices and other ingredients, there’ll be very little to differentiate in terms of taste – meaning the dishes will appeal to all.”
Made from textured EU soya protein, the KaterVeg! vegan mince is high in protein, low in fat, low in sugar and is a source of fibre. It can be added to your favourite sauce from frozen, for maximum convenience.
