The latest study, published in the British Medical Journal, examined the association between fruit and vegetable intake and risk of premature death. Its findings contradict recent research which found that eating seven portions a day holds the lowest risk of death. Consuming five portions is linked to a lower risk of premature death, but eating more appears to have no further effect, the new study has concluded.

A quarter of UK adults are obese

Around a quarter of men (24.5%) and women (25.4%) in the UK are obese, according to a major new analysis from the ‘Global Burden of Disease Study 2013’, published in The Lancet. When you add in those who are overweight, the figures jump to 66.6% for men and 57.2% for women. For boys aged up to 19, the obesity rate is 7.4%, while for girls in the same age range it is 8.1%.

Public Health England (PHE) is calling on charities, NGOs, academics, businesses, retailers and consumers to work together to reduce the amount of sugar we eat as a nation. According to Dr Alison Tedstone, chief nutritionist at PHE, the reasons are clear: “Eating too much sugar is bad for us. This paper outlines the steps PHE will take to help families and individuals reduce their sugar intake, and how we study possible initiatives to further reduce sugar consumption.
