Sugar tax could encourage innovation with alternatives – GlobalData finds
Abstract
Manufacturers of drinks high in sugar must position themselves ahead of the curve in taking advantage of the demand for lower sugar content, according to research and consulting firm GlobalData.

GlobalData found that consumers are seeking lower or alternative sugar solutions, with 63% of consumers globally trying to limit or avoid sugar, and 74% checking nutritional labelling on food products for information on sugar content.

Emma Wright, consumer analyst for GlobalData, said: “With 43% of consumers globally paying attention to the type of sugar or sweeteners used in food and drinks, producers will be encouraged to experiment with different types of sweeteners in order to meet an increasing demand for healthier options.

“Manufacturers can capitalize on this trend by launching new products within untaxed categories, such as ready-to-drink coffee and tea, flavoured water, and milkshakes, appealing to indulgent consumers who are willing to experiment with new flavours and formulations.”

GlobalData also highlighted a Japanese trend for rare sugars as consumers turn away from sugar due to health concerns. Low-sugar versions of standard products are losing ground in Japan.
